Building PerformanceOS in Public: Our Journey So Far
From idea to beta launch: The story behind PerformanceOS and our mission to democratize health optimization.
The Problem That Started It All
The health tech space is dominated by two extremes: free apps that harvest and sell your data, or expensive medical-grade systems that require prescriptions and insurance. There's nothing in the middle for people who want to seriously track their health without sacrificing privacy.
Why We're Building This
Our Core Beliefs:
- • Your health data is yours alone
- • What works for others might not work for you
- • Rigorous self-experimentation beats following trends
- • Privacy and functionality aren't mutually exclusive
- • Health optimization should be accessible to everyone
The Technical Journey
Starting Point: August 2025
We started with a simple question: Can we build a health platform that's both powerful AND private? Not "we promise not to look" private, but mathematically impossible for us to see your data private.
Tech Stack Decisions:
- • Next.js + React: Fast, modern, great developer experience
- • MongoDB with field-level encryption: Each user's data encrypted with their own key
- • AES-256-CBC: Military-grade encryption standard
- • Zero-knowledge architecture: We literally can't read your data
- • Vercel deployment: Global CDN, automatic scaling
The Encryption Challenge
Most health apps treat encryption as an afterthought. We made it foundational. Every piece of health data is encrypted on your device before it reaches our servers. Your encryption key is derived from your password, which we never store.
This created interesting challenges:
- • Can't reset passwords (we don't have your key)
- • Can't analyze aggregate data for insights
- • Can't help if you lose access
- • Search and filtering had to be client-side
These aren't bugs—they're features. They're proof that your data is truly yours.
Building MesearchOS
The N=1 experiment platform was born from our own frustration with health optimization. Everyone's selling protocols and supplements, but nobody's helping you figure out if they actually work for YOU.
Design Principles:
- • Guide users through proper experimental design
- • Make tracking frictionless (30-second daily check-ins)
- • Provide statistical analysis without being overwhelming
- • Start with proven protocols, allow custom experiments later
- • Focus on actionable insights, not just data collection
Current Status: Beta Launch
As of January 2025, here's where we are:
✅ What's Working
- • End-to-end encryption implemented
- • CGM data import (Dexcom, Libre)
- • MesearchOS with 1 awesome protocol
- • Basic health tracking
- • Export everything anytime
🚧 In Progress
- • More experiment protocols
- • Wearable integrations
- • Team features for coaches
- • Mobile app
- • Advanced analytics
Lessons Learned So Far
1. Privacy is a Feature, Not a Limitation
Users are willing to trade some convenience for real privacy. The peace of mind knowing their health data is truly secure is worth the extra friction.
2. Simple Beats Complex
We initially planned dozens of metrics and complex analyses. Beta users taught us that consistent tracking of a few key metrics beats sporadic tracking of everything.
3. Education is Critical
Most people want to optimize their health but don't know how to run valid experiments. Building education into the product is as important as the features themselves.
The Business Model
We're bootstrapped and plan to stay that way. No VCs means no pressure to compromise on privacy or sell user data. Our model is simple:
- • Free tier for basic tracking (but we can't store data for free forever!)
- • Pro subscriptions for advanced features
- • Team plans for coaches and practitioners
- • No ads, no data sales, ever
What's Next
Our roadmap is guided by user needs, not investor demands:
Q1-Q2 2026:
- • Launch 10+ new experiment protocols
- • Apple Health & Google Fit integration
- • Mobile apps with user-defined alerts
- • Community features for sharing protocols
- • API for developers

A Personal Note
This isn't about disrupting healthcare or replacing doctors. It's about filling a gap— helping people who want to optimize their health make data-driven decisions without sacrificing their privacy. Whether you're trying to improve your sleep, manage your glucose, or figure out which supplements actually work for you, you should be able to do that without worrying about where your data ends up.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we're proving that health tech can be both powerful and private.
